The Vermont Forensic Nursing Program provides the highest quality of training and continued education. Training is available to all nurses, in-state, out-of-state, SANE, and non-SANE, to encourage consistent, trauma-informed responses to survivors of sexual violence.
Our annual Forensic Nursing Course is available to all registered nurses to wish to become certified SANEs in the state of Vermont. The course includes an education day at the University of Vermont Simulation Lab, legal training, and trauma-informed SANE care education.
Continuing Education Units will be awarded to all participants who attend an entire training and complete an evaluation form.
Forensic Nursing Course
The purpose of this course is to provide nurses with a foundational knowledge of adult, adolescent, and pediatric medical forensic evaluation. Participants who complete the course can become credentialed pediatric SANEs and/or certified adolescent/adult SANEs in the state of Vermont.
The next course will be in Fall 2024 . This will be a combines adult/adolescent and pediatric course with self-paced modules, synchronous virtual lectures, in-person skills sessions, and a simulation competency at the University of Vermont Simulation lab with live gynecological simulated patients.

Human Trafficking
Strangulation
Legal Considerations and Judicial Proceedings
Who should attend:
Vermont Registered Nurses or Advanced Practice Nurses who complete either course can become credentialed forensic nurses upon completion of the didactic and clinical portion of the course and with the recommendation of their preceptor. Priority will be given to RN’s or NP’s who work in a hospital with an established forensic nursing program. Other health care providers who care for people who have experienced violence are welcomed to take the course but are unable to be credentialed as Vermont Forensic Nurses
Free to all Vermont Registered Nurses and NPs with a hospital affiliation. $300 to Vermont RNs not affiliated with a Vermont Hospital, out of state RNs, MDs, PAs, EMTs.
Instructional Methods and Materials:
This course provides evidence-based information and adheres to the standards of Forensic Nursing practice. It is taught by a variety of Vermont experts.
Each participant receives several resources, that will be a valuable tool for future reference. In addition, each participant receives a welcome packet with instructions on how to access the course. This packet includes activities to complete and a bibliography of articles to read prior to class. The study guide will be mailed to the participant prior to the course and is accounted for in CEU contact hours.
Continuing Education Credits:
This course provides the didactic portion of the training necessary to become a VT Forensic/ SANE nurse. Post-training clinical requirements are performed in the student's community or at UVMMC. Participants must attend the entire didactic portion to receive contact hours. It is an expectation that the performance of medical forensic evaluations is completed in accordance with the nurse’s scope of practice; and the rules and regulations established by their state Board of Nursing.
